Coronation Street is a British television soap opera set in Weatherfield, a fictional town in Greater Manchester based on Salford. Created by Tony Warren, Coronation Street was first broadcast on December 9, 1960. The show has been on the air for over sixty years and is repeated in numerous countries. Craig Charles joined the cast of the show in 2005 to play the philandering taxi driver Lloyd Mullaney.
His role in the program was worked heavily into the script of the 2009 Red Dwarf special Back to Earth. During the events of the show the crew are hurled through a portal and become convinced that they are characters from a fictional television series called Red Dwarf. Seeking their creator in order to beg for more life, they track down Charles on the set of Coronation Street, while also encountering other Corrie regulars such as Simon Gregson and Michelle Keegan.
It is actually the former that leads the Dwarfers to their intended destination; it is later revealed that this all took place in a Despair Squid induced hallucination, although the universe does still exist due to them having conceived it.
