Tongue Tied

"Arnold Judas Rimmer. Your life is over. Come with me. We will travel to the River Styx, where you will place a coin in the..."
―Grim Reaper[src]

The Grim Reaper was the personification of Death in human folklore.

As Red Dwarf was collapsing due to the effects of the Chameleonic Microbe, the Grim Reaper came to claim Arnold Rimmer on Floor 341 as "Adagio for Strings" played in the background. It is unclear whether this actually happened, or was an hallucination, as Rimmer may have been suffering a head concussion after being attacked by The Chocolate Dispenser.

Rimmer kicked Death in the crotch, and ran off down the flaming corridors, claiming that "only the good die young" as Death winces "That's never happened before..." ("Only the Good...", Series VIII closing scene)

  • This scene began a cliffhanger that would never be resolved. Given that Rimmer is once again a hologram in Back to Earth, it seems Rimmer lost his battle with Death, although he clearly managed to save the ship nonetheless. The alternate filmed ending to the episode "Only the Good..." would seem to explain the cliffhanger best, although the Grim Reaper does not appear in the alternate ending.

Behind the Scenes

  • The Grim Reaper was played by series director Ed Bye. It was a last-minute re-write to an ending that would have originally seen Ace Rimmer (actually the original Rimmer) return to save the day.
