Io Polytechnic was a further education establishment where Arnold Rimmer studied.
The polytechnic was located on Arnold's home moon of Io. Arnold took courses there before he joined the Space Corps. One of the courses he took was a sociology class taught by the man he thought was his father. He insisted Arnold not call him "father", but rather "Sir" or "Lecturer Rimmer".
Because he was late for the first lecture, Arnold was used in an experiment in peer pressure. Several easy questions were asked and Arnold answered them correctly, but because all the other students gave the wrong answer he changed his mind. The girl sitting next to him, Wendy, tried to tell him what was going on, but he mistook her note for an insult. ("The Beginning")
Rimmer also undertook a maintenance course at Saturn Technical College. ("Thanks for the Memory")
