The Red Dwarf theme appears during the closing of every episode of Red Dwarf, unlike the opening theme which changed from Series III onward. The song was written by Howard Goodall and sung by Jenna Russell. The Series VI DVD release has a documentary by Howard Goodall about the music of Red Dwarf, including the theme. This documentary includes some lyrics that didn't make it into the final version. Most of the Red Dwarf instrumental tracks are derived from the tune of this song, with only a few based on other beats, such as the ones from "Tongue Tied".
The lyrics are reminiscent of Dave Lister's plan to go to Fiji, which has been ruined by being flung three million years into Deep Space.
Lyrics[]
It's cold outside
There's no kind of atmosphere
I'm all alone, more or less
Let me fly far away from here
Fun, Fun, Fun, in the Sun, Sun, Sun
I want to lie shipwrecked and comatose
Drinking fresh mango juice
Goldfish shoals, nibbling at my toes
Fun, Fun, Fun in the Sun, Sun, Sun
Fun, Fun, Fun in the Sun, Sun, Sun
(An extended mix of the theme was released on the BBC Soundtrack CDs: Between the Lines, The Cult Files and Stellar Themes, that had two extra verses written by Ian Hu who was not associated with Red Dwarf:)
I'll pack my bags and head into hyperspace
Where I'll succeed at time-warp speed
Spend my days in ultraviolet rays
Fun, Fun, Fun in the Sun, Sun, Sun
We'll lock on course straight through the universe
You and me and the Galaxy
Reach the stage where the hyperdrive's engaged
Fun, Fun, Fun in the Sun, Sun, Sun
Fun, Fun, Fun in the Sun, Sun, Sun
(In the documentary "Setting the Red Dwarf Music Score" which features Howard Goodall, we get to hear some alternative verses that didn't make it into the song. Howard Goodall talks about them sings the verses at 6:36 in the video.)
I want to taste
Lobsters & Coconuts
I want to swim
Nakedly
Get quite drunk
In several wooden huts
Fun, Fun, Fun in the Sun, Sun, Sun
I'd like to have
Red blotches on my face
Make a mess
Of my nose
I'd love to peel
In every awkward place
Fun, Fun, Fun in the Sun, Sun, Sun
Green lagoons
Palm trees & cockatoos
Local rum with mango juice
Get things nicked
And ruin all my shoes
Fun, Fun, Fun in the Sun, Sun, Sun
(In this same documentary at 6:00 you can also see that the original words for the second verse of the song didn't make it to the broadcast show.)
I want to sprawl shipwrecked and comatose
I want some sand, up my bum
Goldfish shoals, nibbling at my toes
Fun, Fun, Fun in the Sun, Sun, Sun
