In Doug Naylor's Last Human, snugiraffes are a type of chimera-like GELF (Genetically Engineered Life Form) with a grotesque and unusual appearance. They possess the heads of cobras, the bodies of giant slugs and the legs of giraffes, covered in a thick layer of mucus. Widely regarded as the most revolting creatures to have ever existed—second only to George Formby—just the sight of a snugiraffe can induce violent nausea. Even holograms and mechanoids, who are typically unaffected by physical stimuli, experience dry retching at their presence.

Despite their repulsiveness, snugiraffes are considered valuable due to their unique ability to consume waste products and transform them into a smokeless fuel. This utility makes them essential, especially in confined or heavily regulated environments. The warden of Cyberia, the cyber-prison located on the asteroid Lotomi 5, is a snugiraffe. Unfazed by the repulsion it evokes in others, it interprets vomiting as a warm form of greeting.
