The Happy Wanderer (originally "Der fröhliche Wanderer" or "Mein Vater war ein Wandersmann") is a popular song and choir classic from Earth.
History[]
Early history[]
"The Happy Wanderer" originates from a medieval German folk song that was given words by Florenz Friedrich Sigismund (1788-1857). The song was expanded upon after 1918 by Friedrich-Wilhelm Möller and Edith Möller. It was finally adapted into English by Antonia Ridge (1895-1981). Ridge borrowed over the "valderi-valdera" from the French version to make it sound less militaristic.
Red Dwarf[]
Three million years later, Dave Lister jammed to this song on guitars with a resurrected and "cured" Adolf Hitler (who was actually John Asquith) on the upper deck of Starbug 19 when it was parked outside the Evil Rehabilitation Base. Lister had lost his own guitar sometime previously, but Hitler had some of his own guitars that he was able to lend to Lister. ("Cured", Series XII)
